Cool Kiwi Campers

To kick off the new year, we took a 5 day road trip around the North Island! In the interest of gaining a true New Zealand experience we rented a campervan. Emblazed on the side of our van was a rudimentary drawing of a kiwi bird and the logo, "cool kiwi campers".

The van allowed us a very flexible travel plan; NZ still has many opportunities to free camp which we tried to take advantage of. Some of the best nights were spent in little self made campsites off the side of the highway.

At we learned, kiwi highways are little more than two way roads for almost the length of the island. State highway 1 twisted and turned through many small little towns and countless breathless views. Beaches, mountains, lakes and plentiful livestock were the backdrop to our drive.

This trip gave us a richer appreciation for this country and better feel for what life is about here. Here are some of our pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/megan.leanderson/CoolKiwiCampers
