I got up at 6am this morning to watch the inauguration coverage and flipped on the TV just in time to see Aretha Franklin sing 'My Country Tis of Thee'. It was beyond moving to watch the historic event; I was particularly struck by a group of students that were in the crowd. It could have been the sleep in my eyes, but they looked like some of the students I worked with from Stevens Elementary School in DC. Working at Stevens taught me many things and gave me years worth of fun anecdotes; but perhaps the most cherished memory from my time there was celebrating Martin Luther King day with a group of young African American students. This was a holiday that got recognition, but was largely glossed over in my childhood; but for this school, it was one of their most celebrated days. I can only imagine how it would have been to share today with the students at Stevens as they watched Barack Obama be sworn in as president only a day after the celebration of MLK Day and I get goose bumps.
In memory of those students, who I think of often, I was tickled to find a book that captures the essence of what young students are capable of- humorous, endearing and sometimes profound insight.

Saw breathtaking scenery:

And, they are so on trend... I'm thinking of going hands free a la Rachel Bilson etc.
